The Funeral of Pilot J B Souter 1905
Amidst signs of the greatest respect the remains of the late pilot Mr J B Souter, were interred at Newhaven cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Out of respect for the deceased Capt. W. Morris ( Harbour Master ) ordered all flags in the harbour to be flown at half mast. The coffin was of polished Elm with brass furniture and the breast - plate bore the inscription " Joseph Brockhurst Souter died 12 April 1905 aged 50 years "
Many of the deceased's friends & acquaintances followed the cortège including Chief Officer W P Wooley ( Coastguards ), Capt. D H White ( Berthing Master ), Pilots G Wood, J Taylor, R Robinson, R Mockford, Capt. R Hinton, Capt. Lavett ( Tug "Belle of Usk" ), James Burfield, E Hollands, James Balcombe, Paddy etc. Mr & Mrs Tinley of the Mission to Seamen were also present.
The chief mourners were Mrs Souter ( widow ), Mrs Windebank ( sister ), Mr G Burfield ( father in law ), Miss Burfield ( sister in law ), Miss Gray (cousin ), Mrs Young (aunt ) and Mrs Ashdown (cousin ).
There were a number of beautiful floral tributes , attached to which were cards bearing the following inscriptions : In deepest sorrow from his loving wife & children ; With love from dad & aunties ; From Annie & Walter in loving memory ; Deepest sympathy from Kate ;With deepest sympathy from Mr & Mrs W R Lander ; With Mr & Mrs Pays sympathy ; With loving sympathy from Mr & Mrs Hunt & family ; With sincere sympathy from Mr & Mrs Parsons & family ( Worthing ) ; With deepest sympathy from Mr & Mrs R Mockford ; With deepest sympathy from Mr & Mrs R J Robinson .
