The  Souter Family

Our Family name spelt SOUTER can be traced from today back to WILLIAM SOUTER born 1813 in the Parish of Bury Sussex.
Prior to 1812 there is some evidence that the name may have been spelt SOWTER.
An analysis of the SOUTERS & SOWTERS shown on the IGI data base & Parish records indicate that the names may have been incorrectly entered/transcribed
For example : In Amberley in 1711 a WILLIAM SOUTER married a RACHEL YOUNG. during the next 11 years 1 child was  recorded to this couple but  5 children were baptised to a WILLIAM SOWTER & RACHEL.
Also in Amberley  between 1735 & 1753 1 child was born to JOHN SOUTER & ELIZABETH & 8 children were born to JOHN SOWTER & ELIZABETH
This pattern of SOUTERS & SOWTERS having the same Christian names as well as their spouses having the same Christian names is repeated, not only several times in Amberley, but also in the adjoining Parishes of  Bury, Easebourne, Heyshott, Pulborough & Stedham.
Much more work needs to be done, primarily at Parish record level in order to be sure of the name change. This site will be kept updated as more information becomes available.
